How One Royal Astrologer Got It Wrong….

A medieval astrologer who predicted that Henry VIII would have a happy marriage and be a devoted servant to the Catholic church must have been gazing at anything other than the stars.
Italian William Parron’s 1503 forecasts could not have been further from the truth, as the famously unpredictable monarch married six times and broke from Rome in order to re-marry.
Mr Parron, who also produced the first almanac in the English language – it was popular on the continent and he is credited with bringing it to England – made a number of other woefully inaccurate guesses as to what the future would hold for Henry’s father, Henry VII….

A Tale of Two Weddings

Sad to say, I am old enough to recall the day Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer. In fact, I remember it well. It wasn’t a particularly sunny Wednesday but at least it wasn’t raining, and in a British Summer that’s a serious plus.

I had organized a picnic in the garden for friends and family, and to the accompaniment of my three-year old banging drums, speed-racing his tricycle and serving up water-logged cereal in teacups, we watched the ceremony on TV, tears in our eyes.
Most of us wanted to believe the fairy-tale. We wanted these two people to be madly, truly, deeply in love. As we witnessed them make their promises to each other — she stumbling over her words and almost marrying the Duke of Edinburgh and he tenderly squeezing her hand in reassurance — we thought about the promises to love and cherish that we had made, or hoped to make one day.

Somehow it was all the more glorious because history was in the making and there were horses and carriages, robes and rulers, trumpets and tiaras, cameras…. Read the rest of Penny Thornton’s article here.

Six are dead, including a Federal court judge and a nine year old girl with some half dozen more wounded. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is in critical condition following surgery for a gunshot wound to the head. The dust has not settled on what the congresswoman’s office called an unspeakable tragedy.

Newspaper reports of an astronomer’s view that star signs cover the wrong dates have caused a hubbub. So are Pisceans really Aquarians?
Astronomy instructor Parke Kunkle has generated a wealth of online and watercooler discussion in the US and elsewhere. He pointed out in a Minnesota newspaper that a wobble in the Earth’s rotation meant that the stars were in a different position – as viewed from Earth – than they were 2,000 years ago when the Zodiac was drawn up.
